It’s been a London icon for decades, but the start of work on a brand new luxury shopping hub in Knightsbridge has many people questioning whether Harrods has had its day.
The new £75m development located between Harvey Nichols and Harrods is being developed by Cheslsfield. The architect behind the Royal Academy of Music and Somerset House, Stephen Marshall, has been tasked with creating a high-end estate worthy of top designers and brands.
Retail specialists CWM and CBRE has been tasked with attracting more big names to the development, which has alreadt attracted interest from Tom Ford, Alberta Ferretti, Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss. The Porsche Design Group has signed a deal on a six-storey building which will open later this year.
We’re not sure about Harrods having had its day – we think it’ll be around forever – but it is nice to welcome more variety and it’s also great to see investment in new developments. It was great to read earlier this month about Jimmy Choo opening his flagship men’s boutique in Mayfair too, another string to London’s fashion bow.
