Working from home sounds like a dream come true, but it still needs a bit of forward planning to make it work!
More and more employers are recognising the benefits of letting their staff work from home. In fact, 83% of companies in a recent global survey said remote workers are more productive than their office-bound colleagues.
So if you’re one of the lucky ones given the chance to change your work/life balance for the better, here’s how to boost your home office productivity (and maybe win a pay rise, bonus or a bit of kudos from the boss along the way).
Set up a dedicated workspace
Tempting as it is to slump on the settee with a laptop and Jeremy Kyle for company, you know in your heart that it won’t work. At best, it’s distracting – at worst you’ll get nothing done. Your home office doesn’t have to be fancy – just make sure you invest in a good desk and chair and storage to file away the necessities.
Keep your finger on the pulse
Without your line manager breathing down your neck, it can be hard to stick to the task at hand. Make a list, set online alerts or put up an easy wipe wall chart – whatever works for you.
It’s also really important to keep in touch with your co-workers – there’s lots of tailored online products on the market that are both quick and fun to use, but don’t forget to pick up the phone too. Remember: ‘Out of sight is out of mind’… so keep those lines of communication open.
Add the personal touch
Customise your work space – contrary to belief, hard chairs and harsh lighting won’t help you focus. In fact, when the aches and itchy dry eyes set in, you’ll be much more easily distracted. A few home comforts like cushions, some greenery and mood lighting will help set the scene and relax you into a routine.
Make the most of natural light
Access to daylight and fresh air are a real boost to wellbeing, morale and productivity. Place your workspace in front of a window and admire the view while crunching those numbers.
Just think….no more energy wasted vying for control of the office air-con. If you want to open/shut the window, you can!
Better still; add a real touch of class. Nothing is more inspiring and impressive than a panoramic view, so wall-to-wall glass is the perfect on-trend look. With a set of stunning Aluminium bi fold doors in your room, It really brings the outdoors in, adds a wow factor to your working day… and makes a great after-hours backdrop. In fact, it puts a whole new spin on that office chestnut, ‘Have you got a window?’
Look after yourself!
It’s easy to lose track of time, so take regular breaks and keep healthy snacks like fruit and nuts at hand to avoid those dreaded energy dips. In short, make remote working work for you!
