Busy patterns and bold colours are back on trend for 2018, yet for many homeowners, achieving these vibrant interiors can often be difficult due to having a lack of lighting in particular parts of their home. If you’re tired of having to opt for dark and dull designs and want to liven up your living spaces, there are several things you can do to achieve this. Below, we share four easy ways to lighten your home:
Utilise Natural Lighting
If you’re trying to brighten an already dark room, the likelihood is that it won’t contain a great deal of natural light. There are two ways to tackle this; to increase the amount of natural light entering the room overall, you could consider having another window installed. However, if this is not a viable option, a more achievable alternative may be to take steps to make the most of the natural light already existing within the room.
If you have thick or dark-coloured curtains or blinds covering your windows, you may want to substitute these for coverings made from a lighter material that, even when closed, will still enable some light to shine through into the room. This could be a particularly beneficial solution for rooms with skylight windows. Not only do translucent skylight window blinds enable more sunlight to filter directly into a room but they simultaneously serve to keep the room private, a plus for any homeowner.
Integrate White Décor
While you may want to get creative with this year’s bold colour combinations, adding some lighter shades here and there will effectively brighten any room in your home. Dark features such as wooden beams, dim ceilings and opaque walls will each serve to dampen down the vibrancy of a room. Consequently, a new coat of white or lightly-coloured paint on either the ceiling or walls will significantly enhance a room’s lightness while reflecting any natural light coming in, instead of absorbing it.
If you don’t want to redecorate, try incorporating white furniture into the room instead. Having more prominent pieces such as wardrobes, tallboys, bookcases and tables in white can make a huge difference to light levels, while smaller accessories such as bedding, cushions, rugs and lampshades in white, creams and greys can create pops of brightness. Finally, adding a mirror to the mix will not only serve to lighten the room even more but will also make the space feel bigger and less enclosed.
Experiment with Artificial Lighting
Efficient artificial lighting can transform a dark and dingy room into a bright and refreshing space; however, some types of lighting will work better in certain spaces than others. As such, it is important to decipher which style of artificial lighting is best for particular rooms in your home.
While it is advisable to replace all fluorescent lighting with more natural-looking light sources, dark corners or concealed areas will hugely benefit from diffused lighting. To achieve this, place a selection of open-topped lights in the area to reduce stark shadows and produce a soft, dispersed glow. Additionally, candles are also great sources of low-level lighting and can be easily added to any room, although tend to work best in the more relaxing areas of the home such as the living room, bathroom or bedrooms.
Custom lighting is also another option that can make a huge difference to light levels, especially in rooms where certain activities take place. For example, over-counter lighting in your kitchen may make it easier for you to see while you’re cooking. Similarly, under-cupboard and floor lighting in your bathroom could not only serve to illuminate particular areas but may also help you achieve a more serene atmosphere in the room overall.
Conduct a Thorough Clean
Finally, one of the simplest and most overlooked ways to lighten your home is with a thorough clean. Sometimes, it is difficult to notice the build-up of dirt in our homes as the result of day-to-day living. However, by analysing each room and going over different areas with a fine-tooth comb, it is easy to identify the places that are being darkened by unneeded grime. While wiping down surfaces, dusting and hovering will each help to clear surface dirt, wiping down walls and washing cushion covers, bedding and rugs can make a significant difference to the feel of certain rooms.
